Professional Data Cabling for Homes and Small Businesses

A wired connection doesn’t slow down when the house is busy, doesn’t drop out when a neighbour’s WiFi is congested, and doesn’t care how thick the walls are. That matters for a home office that lives on video calls, a TV streaming in 4K, a games console, or a mesh WiFi system that needs a fast link between its access points.

We plan every cable route to suit the property. In a period house, that means working through existing voids and around original features. In a new build or renovation, it means getting cable in at first fix so it’s hidden for good. Every run is finished properly and tested, rather than left to chance, and we tidy up after ourselves so the only sign we’ve been is a neat new socket where you need it.

Cat5e vs Cat6 vs Cat6a vs Fibre: Choosing the Right Network Cable

The right cable depends on the distance, the speeds you need now and what you’re likely to need in ten years. As a general guide:

  • Cat5e supports speeds up to 1Gbps over runs of up to 100 metres. It’s fine for many existing homes, but we rarely recommend it for new installations.
  • Cat6 handles 1Gbps comfortably at full length and up to 10Gbps over shorter runs, making it a sensible, cost-effective standard for most homes.
  • Cat6a supports 10Gbps over the full 100 metres and is better shielded against interference. It’s the future-proof choice for larger homes, offices and anywhere you want headroom for faster broadband.
  • Fibre optic carries data over much longer distances and isn’t affected by electrical interference, which makes it ideal for linking separate buildings or covering large sites.

We’ll recommend the cable that fits how you actually use the connection, rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.

Home Office Network Solutions That Keep You Connected

Structured Cabling and Network Cabinets

A good cable installation isn’t just about the cable. Behind the faceplates, every run should come back to a single, organised point where your broadband, router and network switch live.

  • Patch panels and network switches that bring every data point together in one place
  • Wall-mounted network cabinets that keep equipment tidy, ventilated and out of the way
  • Clear labelling so every socket can be traced in seconds, now and in the future
  • Power over Ethernet (PoE) where it helps, so WiFi access points can run from the network cable without a separate power socket

It’s the difference between a network you can maintain and a tangle of cables behind the sofa.

Network Cabling for Renovations, Extensions and New Builds

The best time to install data cabling is before the plastering starts. If you’re planning an extension, loft conversion, kitchen refit or full renovation, we can work alongside your builder or electrician to get cable in at first fix and fit the faceplates at second fix.

It costs far less than chasing cable into finished walls later, and the result is invisible. We’ll help you plan where data points should go, including the spots people often forget, such as the ceiling positions for WiFi access points and the space behind a wall-mounted TV.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not always, but for a home office, a TV, a games console or a mesh WiFi system, a wired connection is faster and more reliable than WiFi alone, especially in a busy household.

Cat6 suits most homes and handles today's broadband speeds comfortably. Cat6a is worth it for longer runs, offices and anyone who wants headroom for much faster broadband in future. We'll recommend the right one after the survey.

Yes. We plan routes through existing gaps, lofts and floor voids wherever possible, rather than cutting into skirting, coving or original plaster without good reason.

Yes, this is one of our most common jobs. We use external-grade cable in proper ducting, or fibre for longer distances, so the outbuilding gets a fast, stable connection.

Yes, and it's the best time to do it. We can work alongside your builder or electrician to get cable in at first fix, so everything is hidden once the walls are finished.

Yes. We install structured cabling for small offices and businesses, with data points at each desk, a patch panel and room to expand.

Yes, every run is tested and certified before we consider the job finished.

It depends on the number of data points and how the cable needs to be routed. Most home jobs are completed in a single visit, and we'll give you a clear timescale with the written quote.
